Alexandra Burke has revealed that cruel online trolls made her feel depressed about her appearance after she won The X Factor.
The 27-year-old singer – who won the fifth series of the hit ITV reality show in 2008 – admitted that being in the public eye is ‘hard’ and that everyone ‘deals with things differently’.
Bad Boys hit maker Alexandra also leapt to the defence of her former X Factor mentor Cheryl Fernandez-Versini telling FEMAIL that people need to ‘give her a break’ after the judge, 32, recently came under fire with some fans speculating that she has got too thin
anything that I do but I try not to over think what I look like as it can put you in a downward spiral.
‘I used to think about that a lot when I won the show and it made me feel quite depressed to be honest with you.
Alexandra said nasty comments on social media saw her self-esteem plummet: ‘Everyone is entitled to their opinion but when you read really horrible comments online it can really get you down and that’s probably why Cheryl and people like that hit back.
‘It’s quite hurtful to read things that are not nice. I think people need to remember when they write these comments that everyone is human and has feelings at the end of day.’
Now Alexandra has learned to ignore the haters and is focused on her own happiness.
‘I try my best just to get on with things, be happy, be healthy and smile,’ she said. ‘I think my biggest achievement in life is to be happy and remain happy. If someone’s happy I say leave them alone. Each to their own really.’
Speaking about the furore that has surrounded Cheryl’s skinny frame, Alexandra said: ‘Anyone that has paparazzi following them every minute and doesn’t really get a private life, it’s hard.
‘It’s something you just have to let them deal with. Everyone deals with things differently. I think that everyone should give her a break, really. She’s doing her thing. You can see that she’s loving life. She’s healthy and happy so I say give her a break.’
